Mexican Consulates issuing new, more secure ID

The 50 Mexican Consulates in the United States are issuing a new format of the Consular ID card (Matricula Consular). According to Cónsul Juan Manuel Solana of the Detroit office (which has jurisdiction over Michigan and Northern Ohio): “This document is recognized as proof of Mexican nationality and domicile abroad, as well as an identification, by many federal, state, and local authorities in the United States.

“The new Matricula includes improvements in its already high standards of security measures, becoming one of the most secure documents that the Mexican Government issues.”

Among the new features are an embedded identity data on a Cryptographic Chip and a graphic design that incorporates several features using state of the art software. This Consular ID card is printed on plastic cards (PET) with visible and invisible marks including a laser engraved unique ID number. Also, the picture has a better quality.

The old version of Consular ID Card cards (green colored) will remain valid until their expiration date. At the time of renewal, a card with the new format will be issued to the applicant.

The improvements to the Matricula reaffirm the commitment of the Mexican Government in providing secure and tamper proof documents to its nationals in the United States.
