McDonald’s Co-Op of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan donate backpacks to local schoolchildren

TOLEDO, OH (Sept. 3, 2014): With kids headed back to school, this time of year can mean added financial stress for families—especially because the average cost of back-to-school shopping for a family with children in grades K-12 is expected to total up to $634.78.*

In order to help offset this cost for local families, the McDonald’s Co-Op of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan collectively donated more than 1,500 backpacks and 2,500 school supplies to local schoolchildren during August.

“This effort is part of McDonald’s continued commitment to our local community,” said Tim Sloan, President, McDonald’s Co-Op of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. “We know that back-to-school time can be stressful for many families in our area. We’re proud to help send children back to the classroom with what they need for a safe, healthy and happy school year.”

The donation was kicked off by a large Back-to-School Health and Safety event held on August 6 at the McDonald’s on Manhattan Boulevard in Toledo where 500 backpacks were given away to area children. In addition, some local owner operators hosted their own “stuff the bus” events where community members were encouraged to donate needed supplies, while others donated backpacks and school supplies directly to local public school systems, Boys and Girls Clubs, Helping Hands Charities, and more Other local restaurants followed suit throughout the month of August by donating additional supplies to the cause.

Parents expressed gratitude for the event and region-wide giveaway that helped send their children back to school with supplies.
