CureSearch Walk  is Sept. 13 at Centennial Terrace

By Federico Martínez, Special to La Prensa

Toledo’s Ayla Soria was only 5 months old when she was diagnosed with a rare and sometimes devastating form of cancer that can affect the heart rate, blood pressure, skin, liver and bones.

Despite having to endure ongoing painful chemo treatments, bone marrow testing and blood transfusions, young Ayla isn’t just showing signs of recovery; she's taking a lead in raising awareness about cancer and children.

Ayla, who is now 21 months old, and thousands of other Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan residents are expected to participate in the CureSearch Walk beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Sylvania, Ohio’s Centennial Terrace.

“The half mile walk is an opportunity to increase public awareness and raise funds for cancer research" said Ayla’s mother Angalina Soria. “September is cancer awareness month.”

Various teams of people raise funds by collecting pledges prior to the walk, said Mrs. Soria. People can also donate by visiting www.curesearchwalk.org.

Anya was 5 months old when doctors discovered a tumor on her lower spine, her mom said. Initial surgery removed a portion of it, but when she became ill again she had to undergo intensive chemo therapy. During the past 16 months Anya has undergone four rounds of chemo, but some of the tumor cannot be removed because it is located near her gall bladder and could prove deadly if doctors try to remove it.

“All we can do now is have faith and pray,” said Mrs. Soria. “As a mother you sometimes fear the worst; but she is doing amazing.

“She is filled with so much joy and happiness. It's almost as if she knows how important it is to appreciate life.”
