Anonymous donor supports new Academy of the Americas High School with college scholarships for all new enrolling 9th graders

DETROIT: In an effort to build recruitment at the new Academy of the Américas 9th grade High School Program and demonstrate support for the program, an anonymous donor has pledged a $500 scholarship to each incoming 9th grader (up to $15,000).

The scholarship criteria are:

• Student must enroll in AOA High School Program in the inaugural ninth grade class;
• Student must graduate from AOA High School Program with a 2.5 GPA; &
• Student must enroll in a college or university.

“I don’t know if this donor is a local professor in international studies, or one of our extremely supportive community leaders, or a complete stranger,” said Nicholas Brown, Academy of the Americas Principal. “But I do know that this donation will help us to support a stellar bilingual immersion high school program that can lay the academic foundation for the next generation’s successful college graduates, leaders in world affairs, ambassadors and international entrepreneurs. We are very grateful for this support for our students.”

The new 9th grade program for the Academy of the Américas will offer a dual language curriculum, honors classes, and rigorous academic standards at a new site, which will be called the Escuela Preparatoria Academia de las Américas. It is part of an overall rollout of several major educational initiatives in Southwest Detroit, including a new gifted and talented program, a new adult education site, and much more.

The development of these initiatives follows a strong community engagement process with many parents, students, partner organizations and agencies in Southwest Detroit.

For more information on enrolling in the 9th grade program at the Academy of the Americas, call (313) 596-7640.
