Over $4M for Lorain County announced,
Funds will advance regional economic development, job training & corrections projects
COLUMBUS, July 28, 2014: State Rep. Matt Lundy (D-Elyria) today announced the approval of over $4 million in state funding for economic development, job training and corrections projects in Lorain County. The Lorain County Community College (LCCC) Foundation will receive $3 million to develop and maintain a regional innovation program. $221,976 will go to LCCC for a local job training program and over $800,000 will help with much-needed infrastructure improvements at two Lorain County-based correctional institutions.
The LCCC Foundation is set to receive $3 million for a regional program that will work to assist emerging Northeast Ohio technology companies. The program will assist local entrepreneurs in securing and attracting investments beyond entrepreneurs’ personal resources. The program will also assist start-ups with management services and business assistance. The foundation will provide $3,000,000 to match state funds.
“LCCC continues to serve and invest in Lorain County and Northeast Ohio. The LCCC Foundation will accelerate the growth of early-stage Ohio technology companies and put Ohio on the frontline with emerging and innovative technology. This funding will help bridge an often-challenging funding gap for emerging businesses in the region and will help prepare entrepreneurs to move technology-based startups further through the funding pipeline,” stressed Rep. Lundy.
LCCC will also receive $221,976 to help purchase equipment and construction materials to create a new lab for the school’s Micro-Electromechanical Systems program. Students will use the lab for hands-on job training in this multidisciplinary field of engineering. Community members in the industry also will be able to use the facilities for quarterly professional development workshops.
The new lab will provide an opportunity for regional employers to network with student interns, utilize the continuing education seminars and help with the development of the center.
In addition to funds being released for LCCC, Lorain County also will see funding for needed projects at the Lorain Correctional Institution (LCI) and Grafton Correctional Institution (GCI). LCI will see a total of $560,835 for general building renovations and repair projects, which include a ceiling grid and tile replacement project and a roof replacement project. GCI will receive funding in the amount of $284,849. This funding will also allow for general building renovations and repair projects, including repairing showers.
