Lansing groups seek welcome for child immigrants

LANSING, July 23, 2014 (AP): A coalition of activists and religious leaders in Lansing is calling on the City Council to make the community a welcoming place for child immigrants from Central America.

Maximo Anguiano of the group Action of Greater Lansing spoke at a news conference Wednesday outside Cristo Rey Church, saying that ``the simple word `welcome''' is why participants were holding the public action.

The effort comes amid protests and counter-protests surrounding plans by Grosse Pointe Park-based Wolverine Human Services to house Central American refugee children at its facility in Vassar.

So far, there are no reported plans for Lansing to take in any of the 57,000-plus young Central American refugees.

The Lansing State Journal (http://on.lsj.com/WFm3yK ) says Mayor Virg Bernero has told refugee service agencies that Lansing is ready to help if needed.
