Windsor’s Three Day Riverfront Music Festival, Carrousel by the River, June 13,14 and 15, 2014, will be headlined by the legendary José Feliciano and Canada’s famous singer – songwriter – musician and social activist Buffy Sainte - Marie as well as renowned jazz flutist Alexander Zonjic with his special guests, Detroit’s Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis and the Motor City Horns.
Each day of this year’s festival is dedicated to a different style of world music. Friday is Blues and Jazz. Saturday is The Latin Sound and Sunday presents Women of Song.
“This year’s festival line-up continues the tradition of three days of world class music that showcases artists from around the world including jazz, blues, Latin, folk and beyond,” said Zonjic, artistic director for the festival.
Opening ceremonies for Carrousel by the River take place at the main Festival Stage in Riverfront Festival Plaza, Windsor at 7 p.m. to kick off Jazz and Blues night and ignite three days of exciting music and name stars throughout the weekend.
Here’s the line-up for Day 1, Friday, June 13 – Featuring Jazz & Blues:
Six Degrees, 7 p.m.
Huladog, 8:30 p.m..
Alexander Zonjic with special guests, Detroit’s Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis and The Motor City Horns, 10 p.m.
Windsor native Alexander Zonjic is a jazz favorite across the country for his cool jazz grooves and exciting shows. He has shared the stage with such greats as Kenny G, Bob James, and Matsui as well as Jeff Lorber. He currently hosts a syndicated radio show called Alexander Zonjic From A to Z that airs on Canadian radio and WVMV’s HD2 Channel. Davis, known as Detroit’s Queen of the Blues, is legendary for her big, soulful voice and breathtaking interpretations of blues, soul, R & B and pop classics. She has opened for legendary blues and R & B greats including Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Etta James, Buddy Guy and Bonnie Raitt. This will kick off the first night of Carrousel by the River with a thrilling mixture of blues and jazz that will have everyone on their feet.
Day 2, Saturday, June 14 – Featuring The Latin Sound:
Tumbao Bravo, 6:30 p.m.
The Michele Ramo Word Music Ensemble with Heidi Hepler, 8:15 p.m.
The Legendary José Feliciano, 10 p.m.
The beloved José Feliciano is the Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist, singer and composer known for many international hits including his rendition of The Doors’ “Light My Fire” and the best - selling Christmas single “Feliz Navidad. Grammy Award winning Feliciano is acclaimed by critics worldwide as the “Greatest Living Guitarist” and the “Original Crossover Artist”. He continues his 2014 World Tour this Spring by performing in México, the US, Canada, and Europe. His performance Saturday night in Windsor at Carrousel by the River will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this musical legend. The audience is sure to be up on its feet dancing with excitement and swaying to the Latin beat.
Day 3, Sunday, June 15 – Featuring Women of Song:
Crissi Cochrane and Rose City Soul Brothers, 3:30 p.m.
Beatriz Pichi Malen, 5 p.m.
Renowned Canadian Singer-Songwriter-Musician and Social Activist Buffy Sainte-Marie, 6:30 p.m.
In the 1960s Canada’s legendary singer-songwriter-musician and social activist Buffy Saint-Marie met great acclaim touring North America’s colleges, reservations and concert halls. By age 24, she was world renowned and her song, “Until It’s Time for You to Go, was recorded by Elvis, Barbara Streisand and Cher among many others. Her song, “Universal Solider”, became the anthem of the peace movement. Her outspoken politics caused censorship for radio play and TV appearances but in Indian country and abroad her fame grew. The Native-American icon became a regular on Sesame Street and went on to dozens of acclaimed projects around the world including scoring television and movies. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for the song “Up Where We Belong.” Her unique voice and beautiful songs will make her live appearance a breathtaking ending to Carrousel on the River.
This year patrons can get an all-day pass to Carrousel by the River for only $5 or reserved seating $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Windsor’s beautiful Riverfront Festival Plaza is located at 370 Riverside Drive E, Windsor, Ontario.
