Snyder announces initiatives for Michigan seniors

ROCHESTER, June 2, 2014 (AP): Gov. Rick Snyder has announced new initiatives he says will improve services for Michigan seniors.

Snyder spoke Monday in the Detroit suburb of Rochester. It was his eighth special message to the Legislature and addressed issues such as retirement planning.

Snyder says four state agencies related to senior care will collaborate to improve efficiency.

The Republican governor says Michigan also will create a website on aging to improve access to information for older adults. He says agencies will develop quality measures and performance incentives for Michigan's 400 nursing homes.

Snyder says, ``Michigan has more work to do to prepare for its aging population.'' Roughly one in four Michigan residents will be at least 60 years old by 2030.

Appealing to senior voters is critical to Snyder's re-election bid this year.
