Penguin Beach, Flamingo Key, ‘Keet Retreat open at Toledo Zoo

On May 23, 2014 three new bird-themed exhibits opened at the Toledo Zoo with celebrations marked by local dignitaries, enthusiastic crowds, and feathery fun.

Penguin Beach, near the historic Aquarium and Primate Forest, leads visitors right through the new exhibit, with penguins on three sides. Nearby, “walls of water” offer expanded underwater viewing.

Flamingo Key, sponsored by Toledo Express Airport, is a colorful island-inspired getaway near the award-winning Aviary. The flamingo flock, known as a flamboyance, includes both juveniles and adults, giving visitors a chance to see the young birds grow up.

‘Keet Retreat, near the Zoo’s Broadway entrance, takes visitors right up to these bright, friendly members of the parrot family in a free-flight parakeet encounter unlike anything else in the region. An optional feeding experience further enhances the visit. ‘Keet Retreat is sponsored by BP.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these exhibits,” Jeff Sailer, executive director and CEO of the Zoo, said. “The staff has done an amazing job, and we are all extremely grateful to our private donors, our sponsors and to Lucas County voters for making this possible. It’s part of our year-long celebration of flight, and it brings visitors closer than ever to these amazing animals.”

Mary Ellen Pisanelli, president of the Zoo’s Board of Directors, praised the community and Zoo-wide teamwork that made the exhibit a reality. Carol Contrada, president of the Board of Lucas County Commissioners, acknowledged Lucas County voters’ longtime levy support that helps sustain the Zoo’s daily operations.

Information about the weekend-long celebration, plus fun facts about all three new exhibits, are available at toledozoo.org/flight. Family-friendly experiences like these are just some of the reasons that USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards rated the Zoo #1 in the nation. Come join the flock!

For more information, visit toledozoo.org or call 419.385.4040. Lucas County residents are admitted free of charge each non-holiday Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. ID showing proof of residency is required.
