Ohio has a rich history of talented poets that have shared their gifts and talents through their insightful poems. Ohio Poem in Your Pocket Day pays homage to this history by sharing their work with others, handing out pocket-sized poems on the street, and inspiring Ohio’s next generation of poets.

The Cleveland Public Library (CPL), The Ohio Center for the Book, and special guest Beverly Cain, State Librarian of Ohio, are celebrating Ohio Poem in Your Pocket Day with a variety of events and fun on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Main Library for poet laureates and novices alike.

The day begins at noon with a poetry reading featuring the Midwest’s National Student Poet Sojourner Ahebee. Ms. Ahebee, 18, is one of five high school students selected to serve one year as a teen literary ambassador through the National Student Poets Program (NSPP), the nation’s highest honor for young poets (grades 9-11) presenting original work, and a signature initiative of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Representing the Midwest region, Ms. Ahebee joins the Cleveland Public Library from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she is a senior majoring in Creative Writing.

“CPL is honored to welcome Sojourner Ahebee to share her work with our patrons and community,” said Felton Thomas, Director of CPL. “Ohio Poem in Your Pocket Day is a special opportunity to read, listen, and share the works of great Ohio poets in a fun and approachable way.”

Following Ms. Ahebee’s poetry reading, everyone in attendance and throughout the Library are welcome to join together to hit the streets and distribute pocket poems throughout downtown Cleveland. At 3:30 p.m. Ms. Ahebee will conduct a mini-workshop at the Langston Hughes Branch of the Library, which is free and open to the public. Two other closed workshops will be held for middle
