Veronica Dahlberg of HOLA: Over one-hundred supporters to rally for 24-Year Ohio resident and father of two U.S. citizens

Washington, DC:  Part of the Obama Administration’s “get tough” strategy on immigration has been to throw the book at ordinary undocumented immigrants and then claim to be prioritizing the deportation of “criminal aliens.”  Case in point:  José Alfredo Ramos Gallegos.

According to Veronica Dahlberg of HOLA, a pro-immigration group based in Lake County, Ohio, “this Ohio father is being held in detention at the Erie Prison in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he has been detained for over a month.

“Despite limited department resources, U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton intends to prosecute Alfredo for “illegal re-entry,” costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, and then referring him over to DHS for deportation.  A federal grand jury returned an indictment against Alfredo, and he’s set to make his first criminal court appearance this Thursday, March 20, 2014.

“On the same day of Alfredo’s hearing in Erie, PA, over 100 supporters, advocates and relatives from Ohio will hold a rally and press conference outside of the courthouse, calling on U.S. Attorney Hickton to exercise discretion and let Alfredo return to his family, who needs him desperately.

“The government is currently planning to charge Ramos with the re-entry offense despite the fact that it occurred 15 years ago and he has been a model resident ever since.

“Alfredo was referred to the Border Patrol after Mentor, OH Police stopped a car he was riding in on February 8, 2014.  Even though Alfredo was only a passenger in the car, he was questioned about his immigration status and both he and the driver were taken away in handcuffs in front of his daughter.

“Alfredo has lived in the U.S. for 24 years, since he was 16.  He was deported once, 15 years ago, but his U.S. Citizen wife, who was nine-months pregnant with their first child, urged him to return.

“Throughout his 24 years in the U.S., Alfredo has always lived peacefully, taking care of his family, and with no arrests or other problems.

“On Thursday, Alfredo’s family and supporters will remind U.S. Attorney Hickton what’s at stake for Alfredo and his American family, and call on Hickton to drop this aggressive prosecution.”
