“The Michigan Hispanic/Latino Commission supports Governor Snyder’s plan to create the Michigan Office for New Americans – part of a comprehensive effort to encourage immigrants to come to Michigan, stay in Michigan, create jobs in Michigan, and build a life in Michigan. We must do more to make sure that all people feel welcome in every part of Michigan society - in our schools, stores, restaurants, and neighborhoods. The Governor’s plan to open Michigan’s doors to immigrant families will only work if they know they’ll be treated with the respect and dignity all people deserve.”—Gilberto Guzmán, Chair, Hispanic / Latino Commission of Michigan
“Michigan is home to people from all corners of the globe, and immigrants drive an increasingly significant share of Michigan’s business activity. Michigan’s Asian and Latino business owners alone realize sales of more than $11 billion annually and employ more than 84,000 people. The Michigan Office for New Americans will help ensure that all of Michigan benefits from the strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that motivates so many immigrant families and makes them such a vital part of our state.”—Dr. Jamie Hsu, Chair, Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission
The Michigan Asian Pacific American Commission (MAPAAC) was established to advance the full and equal participation of Asian and Pacific Americans in the building of a greater Michigan. The Commission, made up of 21 individuals appointed by the Governor, advises the Governor and state legislature on policy matters and serves Michigan’s Asian and Pacific American population by promoting their development and welfare and recognizing their achievements.
The Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan was created in 1975 to represent the interests of Michigan's Hispanic and Latino population – one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the state. The Commission, made up of 15 gubernatorial appointees, advises the Governor and state legislature on policy matters and serves Michigan’s Hispanic and Latino population by fostering and celebrating their achievements and promoting their development and welfare.
