Learn About Powerful, Palm-Sized Single-Board Computers at Avon Branch Library

By Ingrid Rivera, LPLS Public Relations Associate

AVON, Jan. 17, 2014: Imagine designing a palm-sized computer that would allow you to open your garage door using your cell phone.

Or imagine turning your HDTV or stereo into a multimedia platform, or creating an automatic food dispenser for your pet that you control remotely.

With a single-board computer (SBC), the possibilities are endless!

Single-board computers are making a comeback, and people are designing them for all kinds of cool projects!

Come learn about low-cost single-board computers at Avon Branch Library, Tuesday, January 28 at 7 p.m.  The Avon Branch Library is located at 37485 Harvest Drive in Avon.

It’s open for all ages.

The Avon High School Tech Club will introduce you to SBCs, highlight their features and review the current SBC landscape.

Come learn about SBCs and the exciting things you can do with them.

Plus, learn about the low-cost options available on the market today.

Note this program is not hands-on but a demonstration.

Single-board computers are pocket-sized devices offering great PC functionality usually costing under $100. These tiny computers are oftentimes used as controllers, connected to other computers or TVs, and peripherals like monitors or keyboards. They can also stand alone.

SBCs are already being embraced by students learning computer science and engineering, and by computer hobbyists who enjoy building and creating in this mini-computer platform.

Scott Seighman, Avon High School Tech Club advisor, said both families and schools are benefiting from SBC technology: it’s inexpensive and a great tool for teaching computer science skills.

SBCs also control motors or robots, and the opportunities for design are limitless, Seighman said.

“If you can think of it, you can probably do it. Just use your imagination,” said Seighman, who is also a systems engineer at Oracle, the second largest software company in the world.

Seighman said people are already using this powerful platform to control the lights in their house or to install and manage cameras, creating their own security system. Others are using the technology to create a little motorized system that automatically throws balls for their pets.

Still others are using SBCs to turn their regular HDTVs or stereos into multimedia platforms that stream online movies and music, he said.

Come learn more about this exciting mini-computer revolution!
