Latins United: Helping needy Latino families

By Kevin Milliken,
La Prensa Correspondent

Latins United seeks to help 30 families every year—a tradition started by the late Lucy Weaver.

Queen of Apostles School, Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic parish, and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) each nominate five families to receive baskets. Club members name the remaining 15. Then Latins United members donate everything needed for a Thanksgiving meal— frozen turkeys, canned goods, potatoes, rice, pinto beans, stuffing, gravy—and anything else that may be needed.

Co-chairs Mary Morales and Mary Jane Flores now organize the event; also lining up volunteers to help pass out the baskets, which usually takes two hours. “It’s awesome what they give,” said Ms. Morales. “I am so proud of the members supporting this event.”
