Toledo Ballet welcomes Joe Napoli as Mother Ginger in Nutcracker

Toledo Ballet welcomes Joe Napoli, president and general manager of the Toledo Mudhens and Walleye, into its society of guest Mother Gingers when he performs in the 73rd annual Nutcracker Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater.

The role of Mother Ginger in this international holiday classic is one of the only non-dancing roles in this ballet with music composed by Tchaikovsky. “Quite often, this comedic role is played by a man in a woman’s costume, and we find the audience truly delights when it is a man from their community who is well known, loved and respected,” said Toledo Ballet Executive Director Mari Davies.

“Joe has done so much for our community, even though he did not grow up here. He has been involved with Great Lakes Center for Autism, ProMedica, Boy Scouts of America, Toledo Children’s Hospital, and Toledo Symphony. He brings a great balance to the dance of arts, culture and entertainment in our community.”

Mr. Napoli replied, “I never thought I would be chosen to play Mother Ginger; so many talented individuals have held the role previously.  I am honored to be part of this wonderful Toledo tradition.”

In celebration of its 75th anniversary season, Toledo Ballet will debut its new Nutcracker set, with its façade that replicates Toledo’s very own Manor House. “So this is a really special production of Nutcracker, and we are thrilled that Mr. Napoli will be part of this landmark event,” said Davies.

Toledo Ballet resident Mother Ginger Rick Woodell from 101.5 The River will perform the role Saturday, December 14, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets call 419.381.8851 or go to toledoballet.org.
