Sept. 27, 2013: The Toledo Community Foundation and The Blade, in partnership with The Center for Nonprofit Resources, collaborated in 2011 to create an award to recognize local nonprofit organizations for their contribution to the Toledo community.
The 2013 Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence Awards breakfast and ceremony took place Friday, September 27, 2013, at The Premier, 2280 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo. This year, a panel of judges selected the following three organizations to receive recognition at this year’s ceremony. They are:
• Innovation award: The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo;
• Large agency Excellence award: East Toledo Family Center;
• Small agency Excellence award: Toledo/Lucas County CareNet.
These winning organizations receive a $5,000 unrestricted grant from Toledo Community Foundation; a $1,000 unrestricted grant from The Andersons; a full-page, full-color ad in The Blade; and a one-of-a-kind glass creation by local glass artist Shawn Messenger.
About the Winners
_In the summer of 2012, American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, along with CGS Imaging, Hanson, Inc., Toledo.com and others, launched the You Are Here Toledo project (YAH), to motivate Toledoans to explore their community. The project’s goal was to promote positivity about the Toledo area and to enhance our sense of place.
This project, which was unique to Toledo, showcased the area’s artistic talent while highlighting the uniqueness of our community. The resulting “way-finding” system affixed 100 artist-designed, temporary, You Are Here "dots" at public locations throughout the city. Users were encouraged to take part in a scavenger hunt to find the dots via the mobile app, which featured a map of the locations with information about the project. Additionally, each dot featured a unique QR code that could be scanned through the app.
As a result, users were treated to information about the artists and the artwork, as well as the significance of the location where the dot was placed. The YAH Toledo project represents a collaboration of nonprofit, for-profit and governmental sectors involving ten different entities. The nationally recognized You Are Here Toledo Project was featured in the March 2013 International Design Awards Annual issue of HOW Magazine.
• Established in 1901, the East Toledo Family Center is one of the oldest community centers in Northwest Ohio. The organization offers educational, recreational, and social programs and services to enhance the function and quality of life of those in need.
The organization provides a variety of services to individuals of all ages, including: preschool, childcare, youth athletics, youth enrichment, tutoring, teen leadership club, alternative to school suspension programs, financial coaching and education, home visitation, supervised visitation, parent education, family events, and in-home and site-based senior citizen programming.
• Toledo/Lucas County CareNet (CN) is a virtually free clinic established in 2003 as a public/private partnership. CN's partners are united by its mission to increase access to coordinated healthcare services for low income, uninsured residents of Lucas County who fall through the cracks of existing healthcare coverage.
Through the collaborative efforts of local hospitals, physicians, federally qualified health centers, nonprofit organizations and local government, existing community resources are coordinated into this award-winning system of care. More than 220 volunteer specialists participate in CareNet’s Voluntary Specialty Network where specialists agree to see CareNet members at no charge for services from a consultation to cancer treatment to major surgery.
CareNet has served more than 25,000 Lucas county residents and members have accessed more than 455,000 healthcare and transportation services that they might otherwise have been forced to forego. With a focus on prevention, the services provided from 2003 to 2012 are valued conservatively at $147 million dollars based on Medicaid rates.
