The Michigan Hispanic/Latino Commission to host Hispanic Legislative Advocacy Day, Sept. 24th
Lansing: On Tuesday, September 24, 2013, the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan (HLCOM) will host the fourth annual Hispanic Legislative Advocacy Day at the state Capitol in Lansing.
The event will bring together representatives from Hispanic/Latino organizations, state and nationally-recognized leaders, activists, students and volunteers to meet with state lawmakers about core concerns including education, access to health care, racial profiling, barriers to obtaining drivers’ licenses and economic development.
“This year’s Hispanic Advocacy Day will be remarkable,” said HLCOM Chairman Gil Guzmán. “I think we will see large attendance by constituents and unprecedented access to policymakers. Working together, Michigan Hispanics will give voice to our perspective and show how Latinos can contribute to Michigan’s future.”
The event is free. Refreshments will be provided before the event as well as an authentic Mexican lunch. Please RSVP your attendance by calling (517) 373-8339 or emailing [email protected].
“We encourage participation by people of all ages and origins,” said HLCOM Executive Director Marylou Olivarez-Mason. “One of the HLCOM’s goals is to encourage civic involvement. We hope this event will spark or renew an interest in activism at the local and state level for our participants.”
The Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan was created in 1975 to represent the interests of Michigan's Hispanic and Latino population – one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the state. The Commission, made up of 15 individuals appointed by the Governor, advises the
Governor and state legislature on policy matters and serves Michigan’s Hispanic and Latino population by fostering and celebrating their achievements and promoting their development and welfare.
Hispanic Legislative Advocacy Day is part of HLCOM’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, 2013. To see a schedule of events, or for more information about the Hispanic/Latino Commission, visit www.michigan.gov/mdcr and click on “Other Commissions”.
