Dream Activist Ohio dismayed by anti-DACA bill to be introduced by Republican
Hundreds of DACA-approved students around Ohio are now able to pay for and attend their first semesters or continue their higher education in Ohio.
But just after the Ohio Board of Regents decided to grant in-state tuition for DACA-recipients, a Republican Ohio State Representative will introduce a bill to deny DACA recipients of their access to higher education.
DREAM Activist Ohio is against legislation that “only attempts to harm hard-working Ohioans and students within the state.” “I am about to start my first semester at Columbus State Community College to study what I really love. I wouldn’t be able to afford it if I was paying international rates, this decision has changed my life because I can now go to school and make my family proud,” says María Sánchez, an Ohio DREAMer.
Dream Activist Ohio and allies gained over 1,000 signatures to change Ohio Board of Regents policy on in-state tuition for DACA-recipients. According to its membership, “The organization will not become idle and watch a bill attempt to take educations away from deserving students around the state. We will stand alongside our allies around Ohio and fight to keep this bill from becoming law.”
DREAM Activist Ohio is a multicultural network of groups across Ohio, building a movement to help pass the DREAM Act and other pro-migrant policies.
Editor’s Note: DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals as authorized by President Barack Obama in his executive order of June 15, 2012.
