Festival of Nations 2013 Highlights

Festival of Nations, St. Louis’ favorite and best attended annual multicultural celebration, will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 24 and 25, 2013 in Tower Grove Park on the City’s Southside, where Rico spent much of his youth.

This year Festival of Nations has new music, dance, food, and crafts to add to last year’s roster. Kreative Pandemonium, the brainchild of Weedie Braimah and Andrea Peoples, focuses on preserving traditional West African culture of the African Diasporas as they relate to the slave cultures.

The Enterprise Main Stage will include some crowd pleasers including Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago (MFDC). As Chicago's oldest Mexican dance institution, MFDC has received countless recognition and awards. The troupe has performed for three presidents and represented Mexico in the 1994 USA World Cup opening ceremony. Additionally, they have appeared in numerous national television performances, most recently at the 2009 Latin Grammy Awards. The MFDC is presented with support from the National Endowment of the Arts.

The monks from Drepung Gomang Monastery located in Southern India will also be on-hand, showcasing Tibetan culture through their snow lion dance, monastic chanting and sand art painting.

In all, 40 ethnic food booths will delight the palates of the expected crowd of 140,000+. Dishes ranging from the Vietnamese Spring Roll to Japanese Yakisoba to Bulgarian Butternut Squash Strudel will be featured.

This year, visitors can recreate the festival in their home through the Festival of Nations Cookbook. This book is a collection of one recipe from every food vendor. The cookbook consists of many detailed recipes for making cultural treats such as the Afghan Eggplant Boorani and the Filipino Turon.
