Imagination, hopes, thoughts and dreams inspired the children who participated in WordShop. This Women’s Initiative of United Way program encourages creative writing in young students. The children’s writings were recently brought to life in, “The Words Are In You”, a gallery display open now through August 24, 2013.
Located on the second floor of Main Library, 325 Michigan St., this gallery exhibit includes creative stories written by students from Rosary Cathedral School. From first grade, to eighth grade, WordShop students work with a trained author and illustrator while developing their ideas during a series of field trips. Through these events, students are able to express themselves creatively, uniquely, and confidently while unlocking their “inner author.”
After writing stories as a class, the creative fun begins as each student writes their own ending to their story, as well as designing an illustration. This demonstrates the ultimate mission of WordShop – to encourage and inspire creative writing and help students discover their inner author through an interactive creative writing process. These two-hour workshops allow students to develop their personal writing styles with confidence.
WordShop officials plan on expanding this program due to its success. After beginning at Rosary Cathedral School September 2012, the program will continue September 2013 at Queen of Apostles School and Wildwood Environmental Academy.
In addition to visiting the gallery, stop by Children’s Library also located on the second floor. Draw a picture of ‘The Words In You’ as a celebration of the beginning of this successful WordShop program!
