What’s happening at the Lorain Public Library System
 

DIG INTO READING BEACH PARTY: You’re invited to the system-wide event of the summer.  Lorain Public Library System is kicking off Summer Reading with a Beach Party.  Saturday, June 8, 2013, from noon to 3 p.m., come to Lakeview Park in Lorain for a smashing good time.  Lakeview Park is located at 1800 W. Erie Ave., Lorain.  Muscle your way through an inflatable obstacle course.  Take part in Construct-a-Saurus.  There will also be games, crafts and face painting.  The whole family is invited.  This event is cosponsored by the Lorain County Metro Parks.  The Summer Reading Program is sponsored by grants from The Foundation of the Lorain Public Library System, Inc., Friends of the Library, The Stocker Foundation and Emerson Network Power, Energy Systems, NA.  For more information, call any Lorain Public Library System Library or the Bookmobile.

 GROUNDBREAKING READS POETRY CONTEST: Get ready for Lorain Public Library System’s Poetry Contest.  Starting June 10, 3rd through 12th graders will be able to submit original poems to the Groundbreaking Reads Poetry Contest.  You’ll have until July 12 to enter.  Winners will receive a poetry journal and other prizes.  For more information on age categories, rules and prizes, call the Main Library at 440-244-1192, ext. 449 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.

SUMMER SCIENCE SERIES: Join the Lorain Public Library System Main Library’s Summer Science Series.  The first session is Monday, June 10 at 3 p.m.  Kids in 4th through 6th grade are invited to join in the fun.  Bring your older siblings along as well.  Space, dinosaurs and the weather are all on deck this year.  Preregistration is required by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.  The Main Library is located at 351 W. Sixth St., Lorain.

LAWN OF THE DEAD: Get ready to take on lawn gnomes at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library.  Lawn of the Dead is Tuesday, June 11 at 6 p.m.  Lawn gnomes aren’t the cute garden helpers some think they are.  Take part in the battle against these small creatures.  Preregistration is required by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.  The Main Library is located at 351 W. Sixth St., Lorain.

BIG BUDDY ORIENTATION: Are you a teen looking to volunteer your time?  Join Book Buddies at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library.  Book Buddies is a program that pairs middle and high school students with early readers.  To become a Big Buddy, teens must attend an orientation session on Wednesday, June 12 at 3 p.m.  Big Buddies must be available and commit to the whole program, which meets on Wednesdays from June 19 through July 31 at 3 p.m.  Preregistration is required by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.  The Main Library is located at 351 W. ULYSSES S. GRANT: The Civil War is being brought to life at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library.  Come see Ulysses S. Grant re-enactor Kenneth Bach on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m.  The re-enactor will describe Gen. Grant’s experiences during the Civil War.  Join with the Library and continue to remember this bloody American conflict.  Preregistration is required by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450.  The Main Library is located at 351 W. Sixth St., Lorain.
