“The Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Music Camp is a remarkable program which embodies both the music and the culture,” said Susan Stone, Ocasio Foundation Trustee.  “The strength of this Camp lies in its emphasis on the Latin side of the jazz continuum, using a unique pedagogy and specialized curriculum, dealing not only with performing the music but also its history and relationship to jazz and all other forms of American popular music,” added Bobby Sanabria.  “No other resident youth camp in the world offers this one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn this uniquely American-born art form, LATIN JAZZ.”

Covered are the technical aspects of playing, composition, and improvisation in the various styles in Latin jazz as well as analysis of Latin American rhythms (in particular, la clave).  The week includes group and individual instruction, rehearsals, music presentations and activities, Latin dance, field trips, and an amazing recital concert (FREE and open to the public, Friday, July 12, 7pm, CSU Drinko Hall).  New this year, selected performance and clinic sessions will be joined with the students of Tri-C’s “Summer with the Jazz Masters” in collaboration with Tri-C Jazz Studies.  The 2013 Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

Bobby Sanabria, a seven-time Grammy nominee and multi-recipient of the prestigious Jazz Journalists Association Award, is one of the world’s foremost performers, bandleaders, educators, and articulate scholars of the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and jazz genres.  His educational residency for the Ocasio Camp is made possible in part by generous sponsorships from LP, Remo, Sabian, Tama, and Vic Firth.  Contingent upon enrollment instrumentation, Camp faculty will include: Jackie Warren, Peter Dominguez, Brad Wagner, Kevin Johnson, Alex Hoyt, Gabe Pollock, Neil Chastain, Frank López, and Jay T. Hairston.

Call 440.572.2048 for application information, and payment and sponsorship options to cover tuition, which includes overnight dorm accommodations, meals, and all other costs, excluding travel to Cleveland.
