State Rep. Dan Ramos chosen as first-ever Latino member of House Leadership

Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) was chosen as Minority Whip.

May 21, 2013: State Representative Dan Ramos (D-Lorain) was elected by legislators in the Ohio House Democratic Caucus Tuesday evening as a member of the new House Democratic leadership team.

Rep. Ramos will serve as Deputy Whip to the minority caucus. In the 210 year history of the Ohio General Assembly, Representative Ramos was just the second Latino to be elected to the General Assembly when he assumed office in 2011. His selection as a member of the new leadership team represents the first time a legislator of Latino descent has risen to a leadership position within either chamber or either caucus of the Ohio General Assembly. Upon his selection, Rep. Ramos released the following statement:

“It is an absolute honor to have been selected by my colleagues to serve in this capacity. I am truly humbled by the distinction they have bestowed upon me and look forward to continuing my service to the people of the 56th District and the people of our state.”

“Moving into a position of leadership at a time when our fragile economy is still struggling to recover, when worker’s rights have continued to be attacked, and while the war on women continues to rage on will certainly be challenging.  That said, I look forward to the continued opportunity to take on these challenges and I look forward to continuing to fight for outcomes that will benefit the well-being of all Ohioans.”

Ramos is the first Member of House Democratic Leadership from Lorain County in over a decade, since the resignation of former Representative Dan Metelsky in 2001.

Representative Tracy Heard (D-Columbus) will replace current Minority Leader Armond Budish, who is term limited and considering seeking election in Cuyahoga County. Representative Debbie Phillips (D-Athens), will assume the number two slot replacing Assistant Minority Leader, Rep. Matt Szollosi, who is departing as part of the leadership team in order to pursue a position as Executive Director for the Affiliated Construction Trades of Ohio. Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) was chosen as Minority Whip.
