Legal Aid presents annual Access to Justice Awards, April 30
The annual Access to Justice Awards Dinner, celebrating the great work of legal aid and pro bono programs in northwest Ohio, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at The Pinnacle, located at 1772 Indian Wood Circle in Maumee, Ohio.
Award recipients for 2013 include: Ken Leslie, recipient of a Community Advocacy Award, known for his work with issues affecting the un-housed since 1990 when he founded the first ‘Tent City” in Lucas County; John Murray, Leslie Murray, and Michael Stewart of the Murray & Murray law firm located in Sandusky, Ohio are being honored with a Public Interest Law Award for their work in protecting the rights of area Latinos being profiled by law enforcement agencies; and David J. Coyle is being recognized for his long-term commitment and leadership in ensuring access to justice for the poor in northwest Ohio with a Distinguished Service Award.
Featured speaker at this year’s awards dinner is Bryan Stevenson, the Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama and also a professor at the New York University School of Law. He is widely acclaimed as one of the most effective public service lawyers in the United States. Stevenson has devoted his life to helping disadvantaged people in the Deep South. He and his staff have been largely responsible for reversals or reduced sentences in over 65 death penalty cases.
The awards dinner is presented by Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO), and the Toledo Bar Association Pro Bono Legal Services Program.
