Detroit area man charged in Korean artifact sale

OXFORD, Feb. 12, 2013 (AP): A 50-year-old Detroit area auction house owner has been charged with transporting and selling a Korean artifact.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say James Amato was arrested Tuesday in his Oxford home, north of Detroit.

Amato, the listed owner of Midwest Auction Galleries, was charged in a federal warrant with making false statements, transportation of stolen goods and the sale or receipt of stolen goods.

A Hojo currency plate from 1893 was sold in 2010 for $35,000. That sale resulted in the arrest last month of a man in New Jersey on similar charges.

Authorities say both men had been advised that the plate's sale could be in violation of the National Stolen Property Act.

he Associated Press was trying Tuesday to determine if Amato has an attorney.
