$10,000 GRAND PRIZE FOR INAUGURAL SPHINX STARS COMPETITION
Detroit’s top young musicians compete live for cash, solo performances
The first annual Sphinx Stars: Detroit solo competition will showcase Detroit’s top young singers and instrumentalists. Open to all residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties who are 18 and under, Sphinx Stars: Detroit will feature live performances that will be recorded for broadcast on Detroit Public Television following the Spring 2013 finals.
Aspiring Stars will compete for a top prize of $10,000 and performance opportunities in communities across Detroit. The inaugural jury panel for the Sphinx Stars: Detroit Finals features jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Sphinx Founder and President, Aaron Dworkin. On his involvement, Marsalis said "Detroit has an incredibly rich musical history and today is a resurgent beacon for the arts. As the eldest sibling in a musical family, I know intimately how music plays a powerful role in shaping and transforming lives. I am thrilled to be a part of Sphinx Stars: Detroit which offers a critical space for youth to express themselves openly, gives them the opportunity to create community-focused art, and enables great talent to thrive"
Applicants are encouraged to audition LIVE on Dec. 15, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Detroit School of Arts where they will receive live feedback from a screening panel.
