SAO MEETING OCTOBER 10, 2012
Toledo: The meeting was called to order by President Phil Barbosa at 6:14 P.M.
In attendance were: Phil Barbosa, Simon Rodríguez, Frances Martínez, Mary Morales, Dolores Rodríguez, Jesse Rodríguez, Joey McCullough, and Carmen Barbosa.
Frances Martínez led us in prayer.
Minutes were read. Simon made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction of Kevin Milliken’s name. Second by Joey McCullough. Motion passed.
Financial report: Mary Morales advised members of the current funds status. Mary Morales also made a report on El Tipico Fundraiser. Carmen Barbosa made a motion to accept the financial report; seconded by Simon Rodríguez. Motion passed.
Website: Phil Barbosa is working on the website: www.saotoledo.com Phil needs literature about SAO, inviting people to join; also, mission statement. Simon to provide art work in jpeg format. Also need monthly events of what is happening in the Latino community. Chevo Torres will provide information on the sheriff department.
Carmen Barbosa will contact Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center to get a list of their monthly happening. Mary Morales will contact the Universities to get information from them. Phil advised www.saotoledo.com should be on all literature and mailings.
OSU/UM game is on November 24, 2012. Game starts at 12:00 noon. SAO will join Latin’s United in celebrating this game. This will be a pot-luck, bring a dish to share, cash bar. Connie Rodríguez in charge of the 50/50 raffle tickets. Return any money to her for the 50/50. This is our second annual 50/50. [P.S. OSU won, 26 to 21, ending in a perfect season of 12 wins and 0 loses.]
Latin’s United gives 30 Thanksgiving dinners to families in need. If you wish to donate a frozen turkey, sign up. They are also collecting non-perishable food. The distribution of the dinners will be Nov. 19, 2012 at 9:A.M. Mary Jane Flores and Mary Morales are in charge of these dinners.
Christmas Party is December 12, 2012 at Phil and Lisa’s home at 6:00 P.M. SAO will support 6 families in the 43609 area code. Names to come from Queen of Apostles School. Carmen Barbosa to get the names.
SAO will provide toys and clothes for the children, maybe an article of clothing for the adults and toiletries. We will need 6 shoppers. The following have volunteered to do the shopping: Lisa Mitchell, Carmen Barbosa, Joey McCullough, Faith Sharing group, Connie Rodríguez, and Mary Morales.
Start saving your non-perishable food. Bring as much as you can in lots of 6. Invite your friends. It will be a potluck.
Dolores Rodríguez also suggested asking people to adopt a family. We will also need 6 drivers for that night to deliver all the food.
New Business
Waite High School student organization Razas United is interested in attending the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center on the Día de Los Muertos. The cost is $336.00 for this. They are asking SAO to sponsor this student Field Trip. Simon Rodríguez made a motion to donate $50.00 to Raza Unida. Carmen Barbosa seconded this. The discussion was that Mary Morales was hoping for at least $75.00. Dolores Rodríguez advised that she would donate $25.00 to SAO so that SAO could donate $75.00. The motion was amended by Simon Rodríguez to reflect the donation amount to $75.00. Carmen Barbosa seconded. Motion was approved. Simon recommended that we should pay all bills that are due.
The Bridge Builders Forum is October 27, 2012. José Luna is getting a bus to go. Margarita DeLeón advised that the Latino Alliance meeting is October 18 at noon. It has already been approved to join as an organization at a previous meeting. Mary Morales will attend and pay the dues of $50.00.
Día de Los Muertos is November 3, 2012. SAO normally sponsors Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural center by purchasing a table. Mary Morales will call Joe Balderas to find out more about this as we have not been advised of place, time and cost.
Phil Barbosa talked about a fund raiser that was brought to his attention. Called Better World. More to be discussed on this topic.
Simon Rodríguez asked that we proceed with the printing of the quad-fold literature as discussed at previous meetings. It has already been approved to do this. Lopper Printing has provided us with 25 copies to use as promotion for fundraising and he feels that we should go ahead with this. It has been approved by the members as long as we can add stickers or make adjustments at a later date. Cost is approx. $500.00. Dolores Rodríguez advised that MECHA is not in existence at UT. It is now LSU.
Mary Morales showed pictures of the water that we provided with our label.
