The program is expected to last 5 years to cover the quarter mile of distance to the Black River Landing, which is the most populated recreational park in the city of Lorain. The first murals were done as “an act of love” for the city of Lorain as the artists and LAC paid for most of the supplies from their own pockets and with the help of the Home Depot located on Route 58.
The group of local artists wanted to give something back to their town and used their God-given talents to create the works of art that adorn the exterior of their building. Having started the first phase of the artwork the Lorain Arts Council then planned on creating an art-walk that would bring in art lovers and tourists to visit the downtown area to enjoy the murals they have created.
The Mayor of the City of Lorain, Chase Ritenauer, came to the celebrations, presenting a Proclamation to the Lorain Arts Council for their dedication to the arts. The Proclamation stated: “Whereas, the Lorain Arts Council is hosting the 1st Annual Black River Art...to celebrate the official presentation of the Mural Project created by volunteer artists, local children and residents of Lorain County. The Lorain Arts Council mission is to beautify the City of Lorain and to promote City tourism through art exhibits and events, while strengthening art programming, awareness and appreciation; and
“Whereas, the Lorain Arts Council is hosting a Latino art exhibit in their Gallery 737 & Art Center to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The work of local artists and artists from all around the Northeast Ohio area will be featured at the event;” then came the official Seal of the City of Lorain and the Mayor’s signature.
Latino artists included: Carmelo Alvarez, Antonio Barrios, Augusto Bordelois, Marilyn Borrero, Jeanette Cruz, Nilda Daleccio, Hector Castellano Lara, Alexander Rivera, and Murphy Redmond. Also, radio personality and musician Pepe Rivera played music with his new group called “Friends of Mine” with Sammy De León closing out the night’s festivities with his salsa band.
Many residents came from Lorain and Cleveland to enjoy the arts, music, and food; one of the fun activities was a paper-making workshop run by International artist Claudio Orso. Not only did adults have an enjoyable evening, but the children had “tons of fun,” creating their own paper. Another interesting attraction was the model search for Miss Lorain Latina as the up-and-coming Miss Ohio Latina pageant gets under way. The current reigning Miss Ohio Latina was present to speak on her incredible adventure as the 2012 winner. The Miss Ohio Latina Pageant is organized by Yasin Cuevas, who is in full gear for the new search.
