DPS opens NEW Southwest Detroit Parent Resource Center

Oct. 5, 2012: Parents in Southwest Detroit have a brand new Parent Resource Center opened specifically for Detroit Public Schools’ residents in the Southwest Detroit community.

The new Southwest Detroit Parent Resource Center at Bennett Elementary School is located at 2111 Mullane, and aims to provide a gathering place for parents to learn what’s happening in Detroit Public Schools, take advantage of parent workshops, and learn new skills.

The DPS Parent Resource Centers are comfortable community gathering spaces equipped with multiple computers, phones, sofas, small libraries, play areas for children, academic tool kits and more.

Parents are offered expert-led workshops, child care, GED support, job training, support groups, MEAP assistance, book clubs, sessions on Title I programs, college information, coffee talks on parent engagement, computer classes, GED classes, ESL classes, parenting skills, guidance for support education at home, and community resources.

“The centers are designed to involve, connect and empower parents to help children reach academic success and serve as a hub for training and support,” said Steven Wasko, Assistant Superintendent of Community Relations with Detroit Public Schools.

“Students have a more positive attitude toward school, and their academic achievement is higher, when their parents are involved in the school,” said Josette Buendia, principal of Bennett Elementary School.  “When parents come to school regularly, it reinforces the view in the child's mind that school and home are connected, and that school is an integral part of the entire family's life. Being able to demonstrate that schools are truly the heart of a community, and opening Bennett's PRC is very significant for this community.”

New workshops are offered each week, such as this week’s session titled, “Choices: Helping children to make better choices.” The workshop offers parents guidance on creating good study habits early, helping their children to choose the right friends and to do the right things, and helping students to choose learning first.

The Southwest Detroit PRC hours are from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and were specifically tailored to meet the needs of the community based on feedback from parents.
