U.S. Secretary of Labor addresses Ohio Hispanic Legislative Day

The Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, in partnership with the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission, announces U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis will be the keynote speaker at Ohio Hispanic Legislative Day set for Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at The Ohio Statehouse. The theme of the day is “Hispanics-A Vital Component of Ohio´s Economic Engine.”

The full-day event will bring Latino leaders together with Ohio legislators to discuss important public policy issues. In 2011, over 150 Latinos from across the state participated in the event.

Hilda L. Solis

Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor in 2009. Prior to that confirmation, she represented the 32nd Congressional District in California, a position she held starting in 2001. In the Congress, Solis´ priorities included expanding access to affordable health care, protecting the environment and improving the lives of working families. A recognized leader on clean energy jobs, she authored the Green Jobs Act that provided funding for “green” collar job training for veterans, displaced workers, at-risk youth and individuals in families under 200 percent of the federal poverty line.

Solis graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. A former federal employee, she worked in the Carter White House Office of Hispanic Affairs and was later appointed as a management analyst with the Office of Management and Budget in the Civil Rights Division.

According to Rafi Rodríguez, Executive Director of the Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, “Ohio Hispanic Legislative Day is critically important to the Columbus region and our Hispanic community. The Hispanic population in our region continues to grow, making the Hispanic vote very important to political candidates seeking office.”

The Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce consists of Cincinnati USA Hispanic Chamber, Northeast Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Dayton Hispanic Chamber, Northwest Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Columbus.
