LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

As members of the Latino Community in District 9, we admire that Congressman Dennis Kucinich has always been supportive of issues impacting our community. As a Councilman in the City of Cleveland, as Mayor, and now as Congressman, Dennis has always stood up for the betterment of our community.

When the hospital on the west side of Cleveland, which serves a large portion of the Latino community, was going to close its doors, it was Dennis who stood up and pointed out the need for the hospital. When LTV Steel was talking about closing, it was Dennis who led the fight to help the steel mill. When Hugo Boss was talking about closing, the only union shop that makes suits in the City of Cleveland, it was Dennis who saved hundreds of jobs.

Moreover, Dennis understands the importance of families, education, and having a good-paying job. This is very important to the Latino community. Dennis supported the DREAM Act for all Americans. Legislation that is good for our economy, our security, and our nation. That’s why the DREAM Act has long enjoyed bipartisan support. It’s limited, targeted legislation that will allow only the best and brightest young people to earn their legal status after a rigorous and lengthy process. The DREAM Act will contribute to our military’s recruitment efforts and readiness; it will make our country more competitive in the global economy; it will allow our immigration and border security experts to focus on those who pose a serious threat to our nation’s security; and it will have important economic benefits. A recent UCLA study says that students that would be impacted by the DREAM Act could add between $1.4 to $3.6 trillion in taxable income to our economy over the course of careers.  Our Hispanic leaders and members Hispanic organizations who advocates on furthering education, economic and social betterment for our Latino community can appreciate such Congressional representation.

Now is not the time to stand on politics, but rather on Democratic principles. Our district needs someone who is courageous enough to stand up and speak for the working class and those who need a voice in the community. Please join us in voting for Congressman Dennis Kucinich on March 6.
