Sacred Heart Chapel’s Novena has begun

LORAIN (Dec. 3 - 12, 2011): Lorain’s Sacred Heart Chapel has begun its “Novena” or the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations on Dec. 3 and will run until Dec. 12, 2011, at 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain.

The Chapel’s “Our Lady of Guadalupe Society” is celebrating its 85th Anniversary of Founding this December. It is one of the oldest existing groups in Lorain, celebrating 84 years of Novenas to La Virgin de Guadalupe.

Fr. Jorge González from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Cleveland, Ohio and from Argentina, will lead this year’s nine day celebration honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Novena will conclude on Dec. 12 with a mass concelebrated with Bishop Roger W. Gries, O.S.B., M.Ed., V.G. Auxiliary Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese.

Daily recitations of the Rosary will begin on Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. and weekdays at 6:00 p.m., followed by mass and homilies at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, and continuing each day.

Special features of the Novena this year will be the participation of the Mariachi Banda Zelaya from Indianapolis, Indiana, to lead traditional songs during the evening and at midnight on Sunday, Dec. 11.

A newly formed group of Aztec Dancers, “Tonantzi,” from Sacred Heart Chapel will perform traditional indigenous dances of Mexico at the Monday mass.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin America during the month of December with moving and colorful cultural events that express the deep faith of the Mexican and Latin American church. It has been celebrated by the local Mexican community for 84 years.

El Centro’s grand opening is Dec. 14

LORAIN: El Centro de Servicios Sociales will host its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Dec. 14, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m., at its new home at 2800 Pearl Avenue, Lorain.

The Latino social service agency will have an open house for the public and provide refreshments.

El Centro plans to move from its current 1888 E. 31st Street location, to its new headquarters on Pearl Avenue, after the completion of a $1.2 million renovation to the former bank. The agency has outgrown its current site; its new building will be three times larger with a community room, a bigger parking lot and will be handicap-accessible.

El Centro is a non-profit agency that was founded with the goal of helping the often impoverished and non-English-speaking Latinos. The agency assists the Latino and non-Latino communities with a youth program which includes: tutoring, adult support services which include translation, money management services for individuals with mental or physical illness, an employment program, a family violence prevention program, and support services for seniors under its El Dorado Senior Center.

Mexican Mutual Society will host Christmas Buffet Dec. 14

LORAIN: The Mexican Mutual Society will host a Christmas Buffet on Dec. 14, 2011 at its club site, 1820 E. 28th Street, Lorain, from 5 to7 p.m. Tickets are $8 per person. They will provide tamales, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, pork loin or lechon, turkey, ham, salads and desserts.
