LCCC Volleyball wins regional tournament, prepares for nationals
The members of the Lorain County Community College women’s volleyball team are ready to spike the competition as they take their game to the national level.
The team won the Division III District 12/20 Regional Tournament and is preparing for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship November 10-12, 2011 in Rochester, Minn.
“This is a strong group that plays together as a team,” Coach Marc Pogachar said. “We’re looking forward to going out and playing our best as part of the Elite 8.”
The Lady Commodores pounded the regional competition and defeated Howard Community College 3-0, Butler Community College 3-1, and Anne Arundel Community College 3-0. In the finals, the team once again defeated Butler 3-2.
This is the first time in history that the LCCC volleyball team won a regional tournament.
Three LCCC players were named to the regional all-tournament team: Brittany Leininger of Elyria, Jasmine Myrick of Lorain, and Kaylee Koller of Amherst. Koller also won top honors as Tournament Most Valuable Player. Leininger was previously honored by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference as Player of the Week for the week ending October 10. That week, she racked up 24 blocks, 39 kills and six aces.
“These players did an outstanding job,” Pogachar said.
The trip to nationals comes on the heels of a stellar regular season for the Lady Commodores. The team recorded 26 wins and just 12 losses during the season.
“I’m so proud of this team and how well they come together,” Pogachar said. “Every girl has a role to play and understands how that role is part of what makes the team successful.”
As they prepare for nationals, the squad will continue to promote teamwork, he said.
“We want to make it as far as possible. We’ll do the best we know how and see where it plays out.”
