Health District hosts Health and Safety Fair
Bowling Green: On October 20, 2011, from 11 am to 6 pm, the Wood County Health District will be holding a health and safety fair at 1840 E. Gypsy Lane Rd. The event will feature over 25 community partners as well as highlight some of the health district’s major programs.
Flu shots will be available from 11:30 am to 6:00 pm for $10 for children and $20 for adults. A fire safety house, games, raffles and several safety vehicles will be on hand. Parents will be able to get a free copy of their child’s vaccination record or get advice on what vaccines their child needs and when.
The event’s theme is “Everyone Needs A Safety Net” and is meant to showcase the variety of programs and services in Wood County.
“We wanted to make sure the public knows what’s going on in Wood County to help keep them healthy and safe,” Pam Butler, health commissioner.
Besides information about health district programs, the fair will have information from various safety agencies, other county agencies and private health-related exhibitors.
“We are a safety net for a lot of people who can’t afford health care or don’t know where to go for help,” Judy Kellermeier, social worker. “We are also able to link people to a lot of other programs in the area to help them get the help they need.”
Helping with the event are volunteers from BGSU and the Medical Reserve Corps.
“This is a good opportunity for the public to see the variety of people we work with to prepare for and respond to emergencies, too,” Trish Benarth, emergency response planner. “And people can come and find out how they can become a Medical Reserve Corps volunteer and help the county with events and emergencies.”
The Wood County Health District provides over 100 services to the community, including medical services for uninsured and underinsured men, women and children. The mission of Wood County Health District is to promote conditions that allow people to lead healthy lives by routinely reviewing health-related issues and taking action to prevent illness and injuries.
