The Silent Witness Project

The Silent Witness Project of Northwest Ohio is a memorial to girls and women whose lives were ended abruptly and violently at the hands of a husband, ex-husband, partner, or acquaintance.

The Silent Witness exhibit has over 55 life size silhouettes of girls and women. This collection of mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, and friends “are a powerful testament of commitment to break the silence about domestic violence” (statement taken from the Northwest Ohio Silent Witness).

The Silent Witness Project started in 1990 in Minnesota organized by a group of women artists and writers, in memory of 26 women who lost their lives as consequence of domestic violence. Locally, the project was founded by The Women’s Center of Bowling Green State University.

In support to the project and to create awareness of violent against women, last September 22nd, the Office of Students Activities from Owens Community College had display 10 silhouettes of the project in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts (Toledo Campus).

This year the 2011 Silent Witness Project Unveiling Ceremony will take place at the Maumee United Methodist Church, 405 Sackett Street, Maumee, on Wednesday October 5, 2011, at 6:30pm, organized by the Northwest Ohio Silent Witness Project in partnership with other universities and local organizations.
