Scholarship luncheon honors outstanding Latino students at Tri-C

Cuyahoga Community College Latino students were recently recognized and awarded Cuyahoga Community College Foundation scholarships, all made possible with generous community supporters.

Students who had an opportunity to share their personal stories included: Leovi Shields, a 33-year-old-wife and mother of three; Adela Redding, who came from Peru to get married; Lymarie Calderón, the oldest of 11 children and a single mother of three; and Miguel Sánchez, a high school dropout. These students all shared their challenges pursuing an education at the August 5, 2011 event held at the Unified Technologies Center and thanked Tri-C staff, faculty, the College Foundation, and the many donors for helping break down barriers to education.

According to Cuyahoga Community College’s website, Tri-C has the second largest undergraduate enrollment of Latino students in Ohio with more than 1,700 Latino students enrolled during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was established by the Tri-C Foundation and the Tri-C Hispanic Council to provide financial assistance to qualified Latino students.  Awards are presented each summer upon the recommendation of the Hispanic Council.  Donors contribute to the scholarship Fund annually.

Created in 1992, the Hispanic Council facilitates the implementation of initiatives to benefit Tri-C and the Hispanic community, advises the College on Hispanic issues, and serves as a liaison between the College and the Greater Cleveland Hispanic community.  The Hispanic Council offers assistance with admissions and registration, financial aid processes, and connecting students with Tri-C programs, services, faculty, and staff, including members who are bilingual.

The Council’s signature event is its annual Hispanic Education Conference, which addresses recruitment, retention, leadership, careers, community outreach, and financial aid. Participants include high school and college students, faculty and administrators, and members of the community at large.

According to Cuyahoga Community College’s website , the mission of the Tri-C Foundation is to secure funding opportunities for scholarships and educational program development and enhancement for Cuyahoga Community College.

Editor’s Note: A complete list of the scholarship recipients appears below.
