Hundreds of laid-off Cleveland teachers recalled

CLEVELAND, August 11, 2011  (AP): Cleveland's school district is bringing back hundreds of laid-off teachers, at least temporarily to help start off the new school year.

The school board agreed Wednesday night to have 365 teachers return to work on Aug. 22, two days before the start of school. In April, the district cut 643 teachers to head off a $47.5 million deficit.

The Plain Dealer newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/qmkUv7) some or all of the called-back teachers could lose their jobs again by the end of September once officials have had a better look at enrollment and the school system's budget picture.

Schools CEO Eric Gordon says in a statement that recalling the educators will help the district keep promises made to students, parents and the community. The Cleveland Teachers Union calls it ``a positive step.''
