Chilean folk musicians sing to raise funds to rebuild a church in Chile
Local singer Emily Pinkerton and Chilean singer Marcia Moreno will offer a concert of Chilean Folk music on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 6pm, at the Saint Angela Merici Church, located at 20970 Lorain Rd. Fairview Park, OH 44126. Funds raised will go to help rebuild a Catholic Church in the city of Santa Cruz, which is still recovering from the earthquake that rocked Chile last year.
Most of the Chilean wine you find in Cleveland comes from this region—the Colchagua Valley in Chile. Its main city, Santa Cruz, was hit hard by earthquake last year, but the community has been working tirelessly to rebuild a city that has become an important tourist attraction not only because of its good quality and affordable wine but also because of its cultural heritage.
One of the city’s most beautiful buildings was the city church, built almost 200 years ago. The church of the Holy Cross (Santa Cruz) was located on the main street by the public square and every Sunday brought hundreds of people together in hope, faith and prayer. The church is now gone. It was so seriously damaged by the earthquake it could not be repaired and since the remaining structure was a public safety risk it was demolished soon after.
Originally from Santa Cruz, Chile, and now living in Cleveland, Marcia Moreno and her fiancé Joe Amschlinger, an active member of the Saint Angela Merici Parish, in Fairview Park, decided to do something to help this community of thirty-two thousand people rebuild the church that played an important part in Marcia’s early life but is now also part of her new family’s present and future.
Together with Emily Pinkerton, a local folk singer, they invite the community to support their cause by attending this concert and making a minimum suggested donation of $10. Attendees are promised an enjoyable performance which will include a variety of traditional Chilean songs as well as Emily’s creations, a mix of North and South American folk music.
