U of M receives record number of applications

ANN ARBOR, July 14, 2011 (AP): The University of Michigan says it's received a record number of applications from aspiring freshmen for the fifth-straight year.

The school said Wednesday 39,570 people have applied for the 2011-12 freshman class, up 25 percent from last year.

The projected size of the incoming class is about 5,970. The university says that's a drop of about 500 from last year as officials work to decrease the size of the class to maintain a relatively constant undergraduate population.

Overall, 16,046 of the applicants were offered admission to the Ann Arbor campus as of the first week of June.

The university says it got 4,265 applications from African-Americans, Native-Americans, Pacific Islanders and Latinos, a nearly 15 percent increase from last year. The school accepted 1,576, a 3.7 percent decrease.
