Oh baby! Cleveland zoo welcomes bear cubs, giraffe

CLEVELAND, July 15, 2011 (AP): Cleveland's zoo is booming with babies, namely a newborn giraffe and two grizzly bear cubs.

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has announced that its oldest female Masai (muh-SY') giraffe, Lindi, gave birth Monday to a male calf, who has been named Trevor.

The zoo said Thursday it's keeping a close watch on Trevor, because he was born with an umbilical hernia and may need surgery.

The male grizzly cubs made their public debut at the zoo on Thursday. Cleveland zoo officials say they arrived last month from Montana, where they were orphaned in the wild when a man shot their mother in self-defense.

The boy bears are thought to be about 4 months old and now weigh about 40 pounds each. The zoo is taking an online poll to name them.
