Snyder wants to encourage immigration

DETROIT, July 18, 2011 (AP): Gov. Rick Snyder promoted the advantages of drawing more immigrants to the state at a forum on ``Immigration and Michigan's Economic Future.''

The former computer executive participated in Monday's New Michigan Media Conference at Wayne State University.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg participated in a video conference call during the opening panel entitled ``Can Immigrants Save Detroit?''

Bloomberg suggested in May during an appearance on NBC-TV's ``Meet the Press'' that letting anyone immigrate to the United States ``as long as they agreed to go to Detroit and live there for five or ten years'' could help the city regain population and new businesses.

The conference is being presented in collaboration with Global Detroit.
