Third Northwest Ohio AIDS walk, September 10, 2011 in Toledo, Ohio
On June 23, 2011 the kick off for the Northwest Ohio AIDS Walk gathered representatives from several Toledo Organizations, hospitals and people from the community at Manhattan’s restaurant on Adams St.
AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC) is the organizer of “RUN, WALK ... or Just Take a Stand” that will take place on September 10, 2011 at the International Park, Toledo, Ohio.
“This event is mainly to raise awareness,” John Hopkins, from ARC Ohio said “People die because of ignorance, because they don’t know about the condition or that they are infected. 25% of Americans with AIDS don’t know they have it. We want to change that number.”
This is 5K untimed fun run or walk or 1-mile stroll. “This is the third year that ARC Ohio puts together this event. “But this year we added, “or just take a stand”. Many people thinks that they need to run or walk, but not necessarily, we want their presence, their support”, explained Hopkins.
Mr. Hopkins was hired recently at the Center as Major Gifts & Development Officer and when he heard about the event and that it needed to be planned, he jumped right into it. “I am very excited about it. I know it is going to be very successful”
Promedica is the supporting sponsor. Also the event is sponsored in part by Valko&Associates, Erie West Hospice Foundation and Buckeye Cablesystem. The kick off event was sponsored by Manhattan’s restaurant.
On September 11, the registration for the event starts at 8:00AM and the 5k untimed fun run begins at 9:00AM. Interested participants can also registered on line previously and if they wish they can create teams. The funds raised will be used for HIV/AIDS education, treatment and case management right in Northwest Ohio.
Currently, there is one new HIV infection in the U.S. every 9 1/2 minutes. More infections occur among young people under the age of 30 than any other age group. As many as 80% of highest risk populations are still not being reached by effective prevention efforts. HIV infections are on the rise in the Toledo-region - especially among young people under the age of 30. (Statistics taken from the ARC Ohio website- www.arcohio.org)

Tercera Caminata del SIDA en Noroeste de Ohio, el 10 de septiembre de 2011 en Toledo, Ohio.
El 23 de Junio de 2011 se pusieron en marcha los preparativos para la Caminata del SIDA en el Noroeste de Ohio, durante el cual representantes de varias organizaciones de Toledo, hospitales y gente de la comunidad se reunieron en el restaurante Manhattan sobre la calle Adams St.
El Centro de Recursos para SIDA Ohio (ARC por las siglas en inglés) es el organizador de “Correr, Caminar…o permanezca parado” que se llevará a cabo el 10 de septiembre de 2011 en el International Park de Toledo, Ohio.
“Este evento es principalmente para lograr concientización” dijo John Hopkins, de ARC Ohio, “la gente muere por ignorancia, porque no saben acerca de la condición o que ellos están infectados. Un 25% de americanos con SIDA no saben que ellos lo tienen. Queremos cambiar este número.”
En esta carrera, caminata o paso lento de 1 milla, no se tomará el tiempo. “Este es el tercer año que ARC Ohio organiza este evento. “Pero este año le agregamos, “o permanezca parado”. Mucha gente piensa que necesita correr o caminar, pero no necesariamente, queremos que estén presentes, que nos apoyen” explicó Hopkins.
El Sr. Hopkins fue recientemente contratado por el Centro como Representante de Donaciones Mayores y Desarrollo y cuando escuchó acerca del evento y que necesitaba ser planeado, se metió inmediatamente. “Estoy muy contento con el evento. Sé que va a ser un verdadero éxito.”
Promedica es el patrocinador. También están patrocinando en parte Valko&Associates, Erie West Hospice Foundation y Buckeye Cablesystem. Manhattan’s restaurante patrocinó el evento de inauguración.
El 10 de septiembre, la inscripción comienza a las 8:00AM y la carrera comienza a las 9:00AM. Los interesados pueden también registrarse previamente y si desean pueden formar equipos. Los fondos recaudados serán usados par la educación de VIH/SIDA, para el tratamiento y apoyo al cliente aquí en el Noroeste de Ohio.
Actualmente, hay un nuevo caso de infección de VIH en los Estados Unidos cada nueve minutos y medio. Las infecciones ocurren mayormente en jóvenes menores de 30 años. Un 80% de la población en alto riesgo todavía no ha recibido esfuerzos de prevención en forma efectiva. Las infecciones de VIH están aumentando en el área de Toledo – especialmente dentro del grupo de jóvenes menores de 30 años.
