Checkout Your Future
By José Luna

Friday, May 20, 2011, thirty-one students from Leverette Middle School, Jones Middle School, and East Broadway Middle School attended the Sixteenth Annual GM Job Shadow Experience.

The program is sponsored by the GM Tech Center in Warren MI and Latino Outreach Program of Toledo Public Schools.

Students were assigned to Tech Center engineers in groups of twos. Students saw what could be their future if they stayed in school, worked to get A’s & B’s, and moved on to college.

María Quintana, a Tech Center Engineer, gave a power point presentation on her personal struggle to achieve her degrees and career. José Limón, also a Tech Center Engineer and host, gave the students a pep talk to motivate the students.

When asked if they enjoyed the experience, students gave an over whelming “YES.”

The GM Job Shadow Program is an example of the mission statement of the Latino Outreach Program: “STUDENTS WILL NEVER BECOME WHAT THEY NEVER SEE!” which is a direct quote from former TPS superintendent Crystal Ellis.
