Coalición de Prevencion del Suicidio del Condado de Lucas “Se su Amigo”

Toledo: La Campaña “Se su Amigo” (“Be a Friend”) es el primer punto del plan de la Coalición de Prevención del Suicidio del Condado de Lucas. (LCSPC sigla/inglés) para eliminar el estigma asociado con la salud mental.
El domingo 22 de mayo de 2011 a las 2:00pm, la Coalición de Prevención al Suicidio del Condado de Lucas los invita a participar de la Primera Caminata por la Salud 2011, en la Universidad de Toledo en Glass Bowl Stadium. Será un evento familiar e incluso están bienvenidos los “amigos caninos”.
No se requiere inscripción, pero sí se aceptarán, sin importar el monto, donaciones de dinero, que se colectarán en el lugar de la caminata. 100% de todas las donaciones van directamente a “los programas de lucha contra el estigma asociado a la depresión y el suicidio”.
Dando un corto panorama de la historia, LCSPC comenzó cuando Bev Bahret, Maria Sohar y Patricia McConnell estaban trabajando en un proyecto y observaron que había un incremento en el número de casos de suicidio en los condados de Lucas y Wood. Esta información se compartió con Randy LaFond, quien por entonces era el Encargado de la Unidad de Psiquiatría de St. Charles. El grupo tomó la iniciativa de organizar un foro comunitario patrocinado por Mercy para ver si existía la necesidad de una Coalición de Prevención del Suicidio.
La Fond invitó a Carolyn Givens de la Fundación de Prevención del Suicidio de Ohio para facilitar el comienzo de la coalición en el Condado de Lucas. Antes que esto sucediera, dicho condado era la única zona urbanizada sin una coalición de este tipo. La coalición cuenta con el apoyo económico de Toledo Community Foundation, Pro Medica, St. V Foundation y Hospital Council.
La Coalición creció rápidamente y se convirtió en un recurso excelente de la comunidad, ofreciendo presentaciones, información y servicios. Para ayudar a trabajar sobre el estigma relacionado a la salud mental, la depresión y el suicidio, LCSPC provee presentaciones apropiadas para todo tipo y tamaño de organización, escuelas, religión, labor o de base comunitaria. ¡La idea es crear una conversación positiva!
Así es, que “Se su amigo” se trata de derrumbar el estigma, para poder eliminar las situaciones incómodas que en el pasado nos previnieron de buscar ayuda profesional. Necesitamos prestar atención al comportamiento de nuestros amigos y miembros de la familia.
Nunca debemos esperar para ver si mejoran para entablarlos en una conversación de cuidado. “Se su amigo” significa que debemos tomar acción, llevar a nuestro amigo o familiar al hospital si lo necesita, prevenir que alguien sea intimidado y amenazado por otra persona, incluso hablar a 911. Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition – “Be a Friend”

The “Be a Friend” campaign is the opening step in the master plan of Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition (LCSPC) to eliminate stigmas associated with mental health.
Sharing a little bit of the history, LCSPC started when Bev Bahret, Maria Johar, and Patricia McConnell were working together on several grant projects, and they observed an increase in the suicide rate of Lucas and Wood County. The information was shared with Randy LaFond, who was Manager of the St. Charles Psychiatric Unit at that time.
That group undertook the coordination of a community forum sponsored by Mercy Health Partners to see if there was a need and desire for a Suicide Prevention Coalition.
La Fond brought in Carolyn Givens from the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation to help set up a suicide prevention coalition in Lucas county. Before this happened, Lucas County was the only urban county without a suicide prevention coalition.
The coalition counts with the financial support of Toledo Community Foundation, ProMedica, St.V Foundation, and the Hospital Council. The Coalition quickly grew and became an excellent asset for the community, offering presentations, information and resources. To help address the stigma attached to mental health, depression and suicide, LCSPC provides a free presentation, appropriate for all organizations of any size, schools, religious, workplace or community based. The idea is to create a positive conversation!
So, “Being a Friend” is about stigma-busting, which helps eliminate those uncomfortable situations which in the past have prevent us form seeking professional help.
We need to pay attention to the behavior of friends and family members. We should never wait for their behavior to improve before we engage them in safe conversation.
“Being a friend” means we check on our neighbors, especially those who we know live alone. Loneliness and feeling secluded can lead to depression and suicide.
“Being a friend” means we might to take action, driving our friend or family member to a hospital, preventing someone from being bullied, calling 911.
Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2:00PM, Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition invites you to participate of the inaugural health walk 2011, at the University of Toledo Glass Bowl Stadium. It will be a family event and pet friendly.
There is no required registration, but donations are accepted and collected at walk site. 100% of all donations go directly towards “Fighting Stigmas associated with depression and suicide education programs”
