Ann Arbor postpones decision on medical marijuana

ANN ARBOR, May 3, 2011 (AP): The Ann Arbor City Council spent two hours debating ordinances that call for increased regulation of the cultivation and distribution of medical marijuana in the city but postponed a decision on the measures.

AnnArbor.com reports council members made a number of amendments Monday night to both the licensing and zoning ordinances that have been under consideration for several months. They eventually decided to postpone further consideration until their first meeting in June.

Michigan voters agreed in 2008 to legalize marijuana for the treatment of some health problems. Other communities have passed local rules.

Medical marijuana dispensary owner Chuck Ream urged council members to make the restrictions as minimal as possible.

Ann Arbor city attorney Stephen Postema said some local regulation is necessary due to the vagueness of the state law.
