Rube Foster baseball game, May 1
The City of Lorain, the Lorain City Schools District, and the Lorain County Ironmen will host the 4th Annual Andrew “Rube” Foster game, Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the US Steel Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain.
This event pays tribute to Rube Foster, the father of Negro League Baseball. Two games will feature the baseball talent in Lorain County. The Vermilion Sailors will take on the Clearview Clippers in game one, at 4p.m.
In the nightcap, the Elyria High Pioneers will battle the “new” Lorain High Titans in front of large crowd.
Both games will be broadcast live by Mr. Tim Alcorn of WEOL Radio.
As part of the celebration, the Lorain Cardinals – 2010 Hot Stove State of Ohio Champions, and Eugene “Gene” Bremer of the Cleveland Buckeyes will be recognized. Bremer teamed up with Leroy “Satchel” Paige to become the 1-2 punch in the 1945 Cleveland Buckeyes Championship Team. The Bremer family, led by son Charles, will be in attendance.
The movie “Bingo Long and the Travelling All-Stars” will be played during the game, and jazz musician, Utah Witherspoon, will play live before the Elyria/Lorain game.
Join Jim “Allen” Popiel (emcee) to kick-off the official baseball season at the US Steel Pipe Yard Stadium. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a player from Elyria High and Lorain High.
Tickets are General Admission, $5; Senior Citizen, $4; and Student, $3.
Lorain Youth Baseball players get in free with team jersey.
