Latinos uniting for the Latino Community Forum, May 24
Volunteers are needed La Prensa Staff
Toledo: With the possible elimination of the Toledo Public District’s Hispanic Outreach Coordinator as its first major issue, an alliance of students, activists, and Latino supporters are doing door-to-door canvassing and telephone banking throughout Toledo to urge the community to attend a Latino Community Forum on Monday, May 24, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the East Toledo Family Center.
Other concerns of the Toledo Latino community will also be heard and addressed.
According to one activist, “The Latino population continues to grow exponentially in this area and across the country,” said Margarita De León; “the needs, concerns and contributions of Latinos can no longer be ignored by TPS or other mainstream organizations and businesses if they intend to be successful now and in the future.”
Activist Veronica Englert showed her dedication to planning the forum by saying, “The answer to our concerns is Latino involvement, commitment, participation and action. No more reacting; it is our time to act! We are knocking on your door, because it is time for results.”
Local youth are also excited about the community forum and plan to recruit their peers to attend. Olivia Paderes, a senior in high school, showed her excitement for the forum by saying, “I am looking forward to the Latino Community Forum. I am happy to help recruit people to come and be part of history in the making for Latinos in Toledo.”
Toledo activist Jessica Molina concurred.
It is anticipated that the Latino Community Forum will host a discussion regarding the education offered to Latino children in the Toledo area. This has been an ongoing issue in the community and the possible elimination the TPS Hispanic Outreach Coordinator has brought it to the forefront. Other possible topics include issues relating to jobs, immigration reform, health care, voting, and home foreclosures.
For more information regarding door-to-door canvassing or phone banking and/or the Latino Community Forum contact Veronica Englert or Jessica Molina at 419-244-8440. Volunteers are needed for the forum, canvassing, and telephone banking.
