Feds investigate immigrant harassment claims

DETROIT, April 7, 2011 (AP): U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it's investigating claims that its agents tracked Latino immigrants on Detroit's southwest side who were taking children to school.

Democratic State Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who represents southwest Detroit, says agents last week took undocumented immigrants off the streets after they dropped their children off at school. A news conference Wednesday outside the Hope of Detroit Academy was held to voice concerns.

Agency spokesman Brian Hale tells The Detroit News that a preliminary review suggests “elements of the operation” appear to have been inconsistent with ICE policy, standards and priorities. He says other agency requirements appear to have been followed and the matter is under investigation.
