April events provide an opportunity to shake off the winter blahs and welcome spring

Toledo: Families that have waited to celebrate the end of a long, cold winter can dust off their tennis shoes and spring coats and get ready to spend some time in the great outdoors.  The Department of Neighborhoods, Division of Recreation and multiple community partners are combining their efforts to get Toledoans outside and active as spring finally makes its way to Toledo.

•The city will join the Toledo Mud Hens and Fifth Third Field to present the 2011 Aquafina Pitch Hit & Run competitions for boys and girls ages seven to 14 years old.  The competition will be held April 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at Bennett Park and again on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.   Registration is required for both events and participants can sign up through the Athletic Office at 419.936.3887.

•The annual spring clean up will be held Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of Global youth Volunteer Service Day.  Residents are encouraged to join in and work together to clean up their neighborhood.  The city will provide garbage bags and work gloves for groups that have pre-registered, and crews will collect litterbags after the clean up.  A drawing will be held for youth and adult volunteer luncheons at the Admiral’s American Grille at The Docks.  Registration is required for city provided bags and gloves as well as for bag collection after the event.  Groups may register by contacting Call City Hall at 419.936.2020.

•The city of Toledo’s annual Eggxtravaganza will also be Saturday, April 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Liz Pierson open-air shelter at Ottawa Park on Kenwood Blvd.  Activities will include bounce rides, face painting and crafts, candy and a special visit from Peter Cottontail.  The event is presented free of charge by the city of Toledo Division of Recreation and Toledo Parks Commission thanks in part to sponsorship from Meijer.  For more information, call 419.936.2877.

•The Aquafina Pitch Hit & Run returns to Toledo as the city hosts the 2011 sectional competition on May 14 at the Scott Park baseball/softball complex.  Registration for this event begins onsite at 11 a.m. and competition begins at noon.  More information is available through the Athletic Office at 419.936.3887.
