Ten Commandments topic of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue, April 6

The Ten Commandments will be the focus of the 11th Annual Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue lecture Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at The University of Toledo.

The keynote address, “Double-Edged: America’s Relationship to the Ten Commandments,” will be presented by Dr. Jenna Weissman Joselit, the Charles E. Smith Professor of Judaic Studies and History at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Weissman Joselit also is the director of the program in Judaic studies at the university.

The event, sponsored by the UT Initiative for Religious Understanding, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Student Union Ingman Room.

“The whole point of my talk is to highlight the porosity between religion and culture in modern America and to showcase the imaginative and creative processes by which a religious document like the Ten Commandments becomes something else again,” Weissman Joselit said.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Weissman Joselit come to campus to share her vast knowledge of both the Ten Commandments and how they have surfaced repeatedly in our culture — sometimes in ways that unite and sometimes divide,” said Dr. Jeanine Diller, UT assistant professor of philosophy and religious studies, and director of the Initiative for Religious Understanding.

Reflections on the topic will be given by the Rev. Denise E. R. Baker, executive director of Toledo Campus Ministry, and Dr. Fatima Al-Hayani, principal of the Islamic School of Greater Toledo.

Small-group interfaith discussions led by community and campus leaders, and question-and-answer sessions with the speakers will take place after the lectures. Free dessert will be available for all guests.

A free dinner will be provided for all interested students by Ferdos Restaurant before the dialogue at 5 p.m. at Corpus Christi University Parish, 2955 Dorr St.
